Clean Bandit star Grace Chatti wants to keep all of her bandmate Jack Patterson’s songs for the group – even if he has penned a grime track littered with swearing.
The dance group’s main tunesmith has started writing and working with other artists following the success of the band’s hit ‘Rather Be’, with a collaboration with Alicia Keys already under his belt and a writing credit on Jess Glynne’s chart topper ‘Hold My Hand’.
However, Grace always wants him to put Clean Bandit first and every song he plays her she thinks should be kept for them, even if it’s wildly inappropriate for them and their audience.
Speaking to BANG Showbiz, he said: "Anything I play to Grace she’s like, ‘I have to have that.’ Even if it’s like a very dark, very abstract grime thing with horrific swearing she’s like, ‘That’s perfect for us.’
"It is difficult to choose what songs go where. Because I haven’t done loads of writing for other people it’s hard for me to say, ‘Right, that track’s definitely one for us, that’s for this artist.’
"’Hold Your Hand’ is the only thing I’ve had out which wasn’t with Clean Bandit, so far."
Clean Bandit recorded ‘Rather Be’ with Jess and although the fame of the artists who now want to work with Jack has increased considerably he is still keen to collaborate with unknown singers because he can enjoy a more casual working environment under his control.
He explained: "Now we’ve had this success we have had the chance to work with a lot more high-profile artists. It’s really exciting but it becomes very complicated when you’re dealing with their schedules and their labels, trying to figure everything out.
"So it’s really nice to have the freedom to work with unknown artists who are free of all that stuff and are hungry to just do it."
