‘The Voice’ star Christina Grimmie has been shot dead in Florida.
Police have confirmed that the 22-year-old singer, who starred on the US version of the talent show, died of her wounds after an unnamed man opened fire on her when she was signing autographs after a gig in Orlando.
In a tweet, Orlando’s police wrote: "With deep regret, we have confirmed Christina Grimmie, @TheRealGrimmie has died from her injuries."
Christina’s publicist also confirmed the tragic news, saying: "It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord."
According to local police, she was shot about 22:45 local time on Friday (10.06.16) at The Plaza Live in Orlando.
The gunman – who was tackled by Christina’s brother – shot and killed himself after he opened fire on the singer.
Orlando Police Department spokeswoman Wanda Miglio said her brother "immediately tackled the suspect".
She explained: "During the struggle, the suspect shot himself. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene."
What’s more, the spokeswoman said Christina’s brother prevented more people from being seriously injured and described him as a hero.
A police investigation is currently under way to determine how the suspect had managed to enter the venue with a deadly weapon.
Christina first found fame as a teenager for her renditions of hit songs, which led to her developing a huge following on YouTube.
She released her debut recording ‘Find Me’ in 2011,while the singer’s second EP – ‘Side A’ – was released earlier this year.
