Catherine Zeta-Jones refused double on Dad’s Army

Catherine Zeta-Jones refused to use a "body double" whilst filming ‘Dad’s Army’.
The 46-year-old actress plays Rose Winters – a German spy posing as a journalist – in the big screen adaptation of the classic BBC sitcom, which ran from 1968 until 1977.
In the comedy, Catherine is the main antagonist and is first seen visiting the fictional English coastal town of Walmington-on-Sea during World War II to meet with the Home Guard soldiers – comprised of Sergeant Wilson (Bill Nighy), Captain Mainwaring (Toby Jones) and Private Godfrey (Michael Gambon) among others – who acted as Winston Churchill’s last line of defence against possible Nazi invasion.
Producer Damian Jones admits Catherine was like a breath of fresh air on set with her can-do attitude and her willingness to do all her own stunts made continuity shooting much easier.
He told BANG Showbiz: "She was fantastic, really lovely, and just got into the spirit of it all. I think she hadn’t done a movie over here for a while, she was really pleased to be working with all these legends of stage and screen but she just mucked in with everybody. We were thinking we were going to have body doubles but her and Toby were like, ‘Let’s just do it, let’s just dive in and get the shot and do what we have to do.’ The attitude and logistically (it made things easier for us because) continuity and shot-wise you know you’ve got the same person, so she was terrific."
‘Dad’s Army – based on a screenplay by Hamish McColl – is now available to purchase on Digital HD, Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Universal Pictures (UK).
