Cate Blanchett gets career advice from her children.
The 49-year-old actress – who has Dashiell, 16, Roman, 14, Ignatius, 10, and Edith, four, with husband Andrew Upton – likes to show prospective scripts to her brood to find out if it’s something that would capture their interest.
She told Who magazine: "I seek their opinions all the time. Particularly with a film like [‘The House with a Clock in Its Walls’], you want to know, ‘Is this something you want to go and see?’ "
And it was her oldest son’s enthusiasm that made her sign up for ‘The House with a Clock in Its Walls’.
She added: "When I was sent the script, I said to [Dashiell], "They’re going to get Eli Roth to direct this. Isn’t he the guy that does all the horror?’ And he goes, ‘Oh my god. You put Eli Roth on an Amblin film? That’s combustible’. "
While the ‘Notes on a Scandal’ star likes to take advice from her kids, she recently admitted they think she is really "uncool".
She said: "They do and they don’t [watch my films.] My son gave me some great career advice a few years ago, he said, ‘Mum, when are you going to make a blockbuster?’
"I said, ‘I was in ‘Lord of the Rings’!’ And he said, ‘Yeah for about 30 seconds.’ So it didn’t really count. I had no brownie points with my children."
Her co-star Jack Black – who has sons Samuel, 12, and Thomas, 10, with Tanya Haden – added: "My boys, they actually prefer the work of Will Ferrell. I think it’s natural that kids think that their parents are really uncool and embarrassing."
