Carey Mulligan received "15,000" text messages after her husband Marcus Mumford was caught yawning at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding.
The couple weren’t expecting to be on camera during the nuptials between Prince Harry and the then-Meghan Markle at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle in May because there were so many other famous faces in attendance, so the ‘Great Gatsby’ actress was mortified when she turned her phone back on after the ceremony and learned the world had seen her spouse’s faux pas.
She recalled: "We were all chatting with my friends and my husband was like, ‘Give us a kiss’, and I was like, ‘I’m not going to give you a kiss there’s cameras’. He said, ‘Well George Clooney is here and Elton John is here and the Beckhams, they’re not filming us.’"
Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel then interrupted to introduce a clip and said: "I’m glad you brought this up because I do actually have a clip here of Marcus Mumford, your sweetheart… We come to you and Marcus yawns. So when something like that happens and the whole world is watching, did you know he was on?"
Carey replied: "No we were convinced there were so many absurdly famous people that we were not going to be allowed on camera at all.
"Of course it finishes and we are allowed to turn our phones back on. We have 15,000 messages going, ‘Marcus you yawned on TV!’ "
The 33-year-old actress – who has children Evelyn, three, and Wilfred, 14 months, with the Mumford & Sons frontman – admitted the wedding went on for a "long" time, but she, her 31-year-old spouse and their friends had rushed to get there after seeing media mogul Oprah Winfrey was among the early arrivals.
She recalled: "We all got up at 5am but we got to our friends house and we were watching the TV and we saw Oprah going in.
"We were like, ‘Of Oprah’s there we can’t be after Oprah’, so we all hustled to the church and we got in but then it was like a two hour wait for everyone to come.
"It was lovely and atmospheric and beautiful but kind of a long time."
