Broadchurch will ‘absolutely’ not return in the future

Chris Chibnall is "absolutely" certain that ‘Broadchurch’ won’t return for another series.
Fans of the crime drama were able to breathe a sigh of relief after last night’s (17.04.17) concluding episode when Trish Winterman’s (Julie Hesmondhalgh) rapist was finally revealed following eight agonising weeks of a gripping whodunnit saga.
But, although it’s received rave reviews, the show’s creator is adamant he’ll never write more content for the programme, which stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman as detectives Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller, and is surprised by the success its had since 2013.
He said on Radio 4’s Today: "There will be no more after this one, absolutely. It’s been an extraordinary journey with the show it has taken us all by surprise."
Viewers were left on the edge of their seats when the third – and final – series concluded with the bombshell that taxi driver Clive Lucas’ (Sebastian Armesto) son Michael Lucas (Deon Lee-Williams) was guilty of raping Trish all along.
The schoolboy was forced to carry out the sickening assault by Leo Humphries (Chris Mason) after he groomed him to become a rapist, supplied him with booze, assaulted Trish with a cricket bat and filmed the sexual assault on his phone.
However, viewers were kept guessing right up until the last minute as Chibnall had made sure that a number of potential culprits were kept on the scene.
The 47-year-old writer even changed his mind on the offender mid-way through the series.
He said at the time: "I wrote episode one draft one and I thought it was somebody and then I was thinking about it and I was like, ‘Oh, actually, that’s how it should resolve.’ It changed slightly but then from the second draft of episode one [it was] always the same."
Although ‘Broadchurch’ is over for good, Chibnall’s talented work will still grace screens as he’s about to take over from Steven Moffat as the show runner of sci-fi series ‘Doctor Who’.
The screen writer will take hold of the reins from next year when he’s joined by a new time-travelling scientist following Peter Capaldi’s decision to step down as the titular character.
