Alexandra Mardell: My mum feared I’d ruin Corrie for her

Alexandra Mardell’s mum feared she would "ruin" ‘Coronation Street’ for her.
The ‘Corrie’ star – who plays hairdresser Emma Brooker on the ITV soap – says her mother was concerned she may not be able to "get into" the goings on in Weatherfield after her daughter joined the programme, but she soon realised Alexandra’s cobbles presence didn’t have that effect.
The actress – who has been nominated for a National Television Award in the Newcomer category – said: "She was worried I was going to ruin her favourite show for her.
"But after the first episode, she watched it and was like, ‘Actually, you’ve not ruined it.’
"She thought it would put her off and didn’t think she would be able to get into it as much."
Alexandra made her first appearance on the cobbles in April last year, and admits she was "star-struck" when she first stepped foot on set.
She said: "It was so surreal so I was a bit star-struck by everyone, but I tried to play it cool.
"But everyone was so welcoming, so as soon as I got there I felt settled and comfortable with everyone. It was lovely.
"It was quite unusual how much you get recognised you after my first episode.
"It doesn’t feel like you’re working, it just feels like I’m having such a good time every day with my friends and just enjoying it."
Prior to landing a role on ‘Corrie’, Alexandra cut her teeth opposite legendary actress Brenda Blethyn in ITV drama ‘Vera’.
Speaking on ‘Lorraine’, she added: "She taught me so much, that was my first TV job. I learnt so much from her. It was amazing."
