Adam Driver thinks ‘Star Wars Episode VIII’ is similar to ‘The Empire Strikes Back’.
The 32-year-old actor – who will reprise his role as Kylo Ren in the next installment of the franchise – thinks the upcoming movie has a very different "tone" to last year’s ‘Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens’, in much the same was as the first sequel to the original ‘Star Wars’ was seen as "dark".
And Adam is pleased writer-and-director Rian Johnson isn’t "dumbing down" the script for anyone.
Asked what the script is like, he told Collider: "It’s great. It’s similar to how ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ has a different tone.
"For that people always go, ‘Oooh, it’s dark’ but I don’t know that it necessarily is. It’s just different in tone in a way that I think is great and necessary but also very clear.
"He trusts [that] his audience is ready for nuance and ambiguity.
"He’s not dumbing anything down for someone and that’s really fun to play."
Adam also praised the new helmsman for the ease in which he has taken over from J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan in writing for his character, who was introduced in ‘The Force Awakens’.
He said: "Rian is coming into something that we kind of set up and he just took it to the next level in a really great way.
"He wrote it, too, and Rian’s writing is so clear. I learned a lot of things about my character through his writing. … To understand what J.J. was doing and take ownership from there is kind of a remarkable thing."
