Peter Capaldi didn’t want Doctor Who flirting

Peter Capaldi was "absolutely adamant" he didn’t want any on-screen flirting with Jenna Coleman in ‘Doctor Who’.

The 56-year-old star is set to portray the titular Time Lord in the upcoming eighth series of the BBC One sci-fi show and while Jenna’s alter-ego Clara Oswald enjoyed a kiss with Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith last year, Peter was insistent that a similar relationship wouldn’t play out between their respective characters.

He said: "There’ll be no flirting, that’s for sure. It’s not what this Doctor’s concerned with."

Making reference to a 1990s Renault Clio advert in which an older man flirts with a younger woman, who turns out to be his daughter, he added: "It’s quite a fun relationship, but no, I did call and say, ‘I want no Papa-Nicole moments’. I think there was a bit of tension with that at first, but I was absolutely adamant."

Peter admits he carefully considered the offer of the Twelfth Doctor before accepting the role because he had to think over whether he wanted to receive the level of attention that comes with playing the part.

He added to the Sunday Times Magazine: "I didn’t want to be Doctor Who in a Doctor Who I didn’t like. I had to be convinced the show was going in a direction I was interested in.

"I had to think carefully about the level of visibility. My life was blessed, but as soon as this happened I had paparazzi outside my house. People spoke to me before and recognised me, but nothing like this.

"I had to decide if I was ready to live with that, because once that genie is out of the bottle, it doesn’t go back in."
