Dove Cameron felt as if she had to ‘diminish her voice’ in the early days of her music career

Dove Cameron felt as if she had to “diminish her voice” in the early days of her music career.

The 29-year-old star first found fame on Dinsey Channel in the late 2010s and felt that when she branched out into pop following her success on the sitcom ‘Liv and Maddie she had to change her natural sound so that it “fit” a certain requirement.

She told E! News: “I had this weird belief that my full voice—like belting—was not appropriate for pop [music].

“I don’t know why I had this complex. I thought it translated as very aggressive or nasally or just not nice to listen to. All of my previous music—like ‘Boyfriend’ or ‘Breakfast’—it’s very sultry and whispery “It was something that I thought was, like, ‘radio.’ I had to diminish my voice, diminish my sound, make it fit something.”

The ‘Descendants’ atress then went on to appear in ‘Hairspray Live!’ opposite the likes of Ariana Grande and Kristin Chenwoeth before enjoying a stint in the leading role of a London production of the musical ‘Light in the Piazza’.

Following the release of her new single ‘Too Much’, Dove – who has so far released one studio album – revealed that even her best friend berated her for not showcasing her natural chops in other tracks that she has recorded over the years.

She said: “My best friend Veronica was always like, ‘You’re so stupid, you have three brain cells. Why aren’t you singing on your songs?

“So, I finally just bossed up and tried it, and I was like, ‘Oh, I was being silly. I like it.

“I had this weird, self-imposed rule, like, ‘I can’t do that. Other people can do it, but I can’t do that.”
