‘Who knows what the future holds?’ Cast’s John Power discusses possible reunion for The La’s

Cast’s John Power won’t rule out the possibility of The La’s reforming because he has “learned in life is that nothing is ever really done and dusted”.

The 56-year-old musician played bass in Lee Mavers’ band – who released their one and only self-titled album in 1990 and are famous for their singles ‘There She Goes’, ‘Way Out’, and ‘Timeless Melody’ – from 1986 until he quit in December 1991.

Power last performed with Mavers as The La’s in 2005, while the elusive 61-year-old singer/songwriter performed shows under the group’s moniker in 2011 with Gary Murphy on bass guitar instead of John.

‘Walkaway’ hitmaker Power has not had a discussion with Mavers about reuniting The La’s but insists he would never say never when it comes to playing those iconic songs again.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz, he said: “If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life is that nothing is ever really done and dusted. Who knows what the future holds?

“Lee is a genuine and amazing songwriter; the most gifted songwriter of a generation. He’s writing and he’s doing his thing. Whether me and Lee will ever play together again, I don’t know. There are no plans to.

“I only have fond and beautiful memories of that time. The La’s is special and it has inspired me to be the songwriter I am and it will continue to inspire me.”

Cast have just released their seventh studio LP ‘Love Is the Call’, and Power has described that collection of songs as capturing the “sweet spot” between Cast’s 1995 debut album ‘All Change’ and the end of The La’s “whilst not being a parody of either of them”.

The Liverpool indie icon admits the impact of The La’s songs means he always feels connected to his former band.

Power said: “You know what? I don’t look at time as past, present and future anymore. I look at it as one moment that stretches out and it’s a continuum.

“The La’s was an amazing experience, an amazing time of my life. You get to a certain age and memories have a time scale. It’s only when I see photos of The La’s and people will post performances, I’ve never really left The La’s, if you know what I mean. How can I leave that part of my life? I’m always walking round with a little bit of it in me.”

Cast’s ‘Love Is the Call’ is out now, and the band are on a UK tour throughout February and March. They will also be supporting Liam Gallagher on his ‘Definitely Maybe’ anniversary tour in the summer.
