Artwork revealed for Fury From The Deep

BBC Studios has revealed the artwork for the lost ‘Doctor Who’ story ‘Fury From The Deep’.

The animated adventure follows the release of ‘The Power of the Daleks’, ‘The Faceless Ones’, ‘Shada’ and ‘The Macra Terror’ and is the sixth serial of the fifth season of the classic sci-fi show, starring Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor.

It was originally broadcast in six weekly parts from 16 March to 20 April 1968 but the original tapes went missing after broadcast, leaving no existing copy in the BBC archives.

However, recordings of the soundtrack survived, along with snippets of footage, leading to an animated recreation using the voices of the original cast.

‘Fury From The Deep’ features the Second Doctor (Troughton) and his companions Jamie McCrimmon, played by Frazer Hines and Victoria Waterfield, portrayed by Deborah Watling.

The storyline concerns a colony of sentient, parasitic seaweed, last seen in the 18th century, returning to attack a number of gas installations in the North Sea in an attempt to take over humanity.

‘Fury From The Deep’ is notable for the first appearance of The Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, and it is also assistant Victoria’s last adventure on the show.

Along with the animated episodes, fans will be treated to extras including a making-of featurette ‘The Cruel Sea – Surviving Fury From The Deep’.

In the featurette, original cast members Frazer, June Murphy and Brian Cullingford revisit filming locations with production assistant Michael Briant, assistant floor manager Margot Hayhoe and helicopter pilot Mike Smith.

Watling also contributes to the extras and there is an archive audio interview with director Hugh David.

The new animated release will be available on DVD, Blu-ray and Steelbook from 14th September 2020. Pre-orders are available now from Amazon, HMV and Zoom.
