Amanda Mealing: Casualty is in better place to resume than many shows

Amanda Mealing believes ‘Casualty’ is in a "better place than many" when it comes to returning to work, because the cast can "visibly get away with wearing PPE".

The BBC medical drama is set in a hospital, so it won’t look odd to the audience to see the characters wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and Amanda – who plays Connie Beauchamp – admitted the show’s bosses are "trying to find solutions" to get back in the studio amid the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: "We’re trying to find solutions. We’ll never leave the audience without something.

"Because ‘Casualty’ is set in an ED, we’re in a better place than many. We can visibly get away with wearing PPE."

While the characters can be heavily protected, Amanda admitted the crew members will also need something similar.

She added to TV Times magazine: "We need protection for the rest of the crew. We’ll find a way."

Amanda’s comments come after it was revealed last week that sister show ‘Holby City’ will return to screens next month after an extended break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Schedules released last Wednesday (20.05.20) stated the programme will be back on the small screen from June 2nd and it will air weekly from that date.

In March, the BBC made the decision to suspend production on ‘Casualty’, ‘Holby’, ‘EastEnders’ and ‘Doctors’, because of the ongoing health crisis, while ITV and Channel 4 took similar measures.

There are currently no details about when the two hospital serial dramas will resume filming, with ‘Holby’ set to pick up where it left off when it returns this summer, which means the fallout from Zav Duval’s (Marcus Griffiths) death will be the focus.
