Jane Hazlegrove was ‘petrified’ about Coronation Street return

Jane Hazlegrove was "absolutely petrified" about re-joining ‘Coronation Street’.
The 51-year-old actress initially starred as cheeky teen Sue Clayton – the daughter of milkman Harry Clayton (Johnny Leeze) and sister of Andrea Clayton (Caroline O’Neill) – on the cobbles in 1985, making 27 appearances on the show, but she returned to the cobbles as new character Bernie Winter this year, and was worried about letting her family down.
She said: "I wasn’t nervous at all then, but now, a woman in my 50s, it was really frightening.
"Because it’s ‘Coronation Street’, it’s a big gig.
"I don’t want to let the show down and I don’t want to let myself down, or the family.
"So I was absolutely petrified.
"But dear Dolly and Sam, they sort of pushed me around and guided me to the green room, and worked out when I needed a cup of tea and things."
While Jane is enjoying herself on the cobbles, she finds it tough to watch herself back on screen because she is so self-critical.
Speaking on ‘Lorraine’, she added: "It is quite difficult when I pop up, because I tend to throw things at the television.
"I’m quite hard on myself. I think that’s important though.
"Impostor syndrome that at any moment [someone] could just go, ‘Are you Jane Hazlegrove? Get out.’ "
Jane – who played Kathleen ‘Dixie’ Dixon in ‘Casualty’ from 2006 to 2016, before returning for a stint earlier this year – confirmed in May that she was re-joining ‘Corrie’, before first appearing on screen in July.
She said at the time: "I’m thrilled to be joining ‘Coronation Street’.
"It’s where I started my apprenticeship as a very young actor. I can’t wait to get stuck in."
A ‘Coronation Street’ spokesperson said: "Like mother, like daughter. We are very pleased that the fantastic Jane Hazlegrove has agreed to join the cast as the irrepressible and impossible Gemma’s even more irrepressible and impossible mother. Fur will fly."
