Abbie Cornish: Robocop was part of childhood

Abbie Cornish wanted to appear in ‘RoboCop’ because it reminded her of her childhood.

The blonde beauty was a big fan of the 1987 original movie – which starred Peter Weller in the lead role – so jumped at the chance to work with director José Padilha and actors Gary Oldman and Joel Kinnaman.

She told BANG Showbiz: "I was attracted to the film because it was part of my childhood, also I wanted to work with Jose and Gary Oldman…

"It was a role I took because of the director and the actors, I didn’t read a script when I took this role on I just took it because I had a good feeling about it."

The 31-year-old actress admits she felt she had "got lucky" landing the role of cyborg cop Alex Murphy’s wife Clara because she had such a great time on set.

Speaking at the world premiere of the film at London’s BFI IMAX South Bank last night (05.02.14), she said: "I would literally turn up in Toronto, I’d fly back and they’d be like you’re not leaving on Wednesday you’re leaving on Friday. I’d say, ‘Why.’ And they’d be like, ‘Because you have a scene with Gary Oldman.’ I’d be speechless, and thinking, ‘I have a scene with Gary Oldman!’ I felt like I got lucky constantly shooting this film."

Abbie thinks the time was right to reboot the franchise because of developments in technology, and she believes the new movie has more of a "heartbeat" because of the introduction of Alex’s family.

She said: "First of all from 1987 to 2014, the changes in technology alone and what you can do with CGI is insane. I think it’s more timely now, it’s more relevant, it’s more tangible, and I think that’s what’s good about bringing the family into it, it gives it a bit more of a heartbeat, it gives the film a pulse as well as the man versus machine story and the existential element of the story.

"It’s a movie about technology and advancements in a military world, it’s about a man’s battle for his soul, what it is to be human."

Abbie was joined on the red carpet by co-stars Gary and Joel Kinnaman – who plays the lead role of Alex Murphy – and her director José.
