A Very English Scandal leads BAFTA Craft Winners

‘A Very English Scandal’ led the winners at the British Academy Television Craft Awards.
The mini-series – which followed the real-life sex scandal of politician Jeremy Thorpe – had a successful evening, with Suzanne Cave taking the prize for Costume Design, Stephen Frears honoured with Director: Fiction and Editing: Fiction going to Pia Di Ciaula, while both ‘Killing Eve’ and ‘Patrick Melrose’ scooped two prizes each.
The BBC spy drama, which stars Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, win for Sound: Fiction and David Holmes and Keefus Ciancia recognised with the Original Music prize, while the Benedict Cumberbatch series took home the Production Design and Writer: Drama awards for Tom Burton and David Nicholls respectively.
‘This Country’ scribes Daisy May and Charlie Cooper – who took the Breakthrough Award at the 2018 ceremony – picked up the Writer: Comedy honour this year.
The ceremony – which was hosted by Stephen Mangan at The Brewery in London – paid tribute to script supervisor Emma Thomas with the BAFTA Special Award for her outstanding contribution to the industry after working on shows including ‘Birds of a Feather’, ‘Benidorm’, ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’, ‘The Bill’ and ‘Luther’.
This year’s Breakthrough Talent award went to composer, producer and writer Akemnji Ndifornyen for ‘Famalam’.
The BBC Studios team were honoured with the Entertainment Craft Team accolade for the ‘Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance’, which paid tribute to the victims of war and conflict, while The Director: Factual gong was presented to Ben Anthony for ‘Grenfell’.
The evening saw a number of first-time winners, including Barbara Wiltshire, whose work on ‘Inside No 9 Live: Dead Line’ saw her scoop the BAFTA for Director: Multi-Camera, and ‘Bros: After the Screaming Stops’ editor Will Gilbey, who took the Editing: Factual prize.
