Steve Backshall feared death in terrifying whirlpool

Steve Backshall thought he was going to die when he was dragged underwater by a whirlpool.
The wildlife presenter – who has nine-month-old son Logan with his Olympic rower wife Helen Glover – was scared he would never see his family again during the terrifying incident while filming new BBC Two show ‘Undiscovered Worlds’ in the Himalayas.
He’s quoted by The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column as saying: "For five minutes I was being dragged under the water again and again, slowly drowning. That’s enough time to think, ‘This is really bad and I’m not going to get to see Helen and Logan again.’
"I was terrified. It’s a really horrible way to go. You can’t breathe, you’re freezing cold and I’d lost use of my fingers by being hammered underwater."
Thankfully, he was saved by safety kayaker Sal Montgomery.
The scenes will air on BBC Two later this year, while six episodes will be shown on Dave in July.
Naturalist Steve, 45, and Helen, 32, welcomed their first son Logan into the world in July last year, and he described it as his "biggest adventure".
At the time, the loved-up couple – who got married in 2016 – shared the same sweet black and white snap of Steve holding their baby’s tiny foot in his hand to reveal the happy news.
Helen wrote: "Steve and I will are excited to welcome Baby Boy Backshall to the world, we promise to make it a great one for you little man @backshall.steve. (sic)"
The couple first announced they were expecting twins in March 2018, but a month later, Helen posted on social media that she had suffered a miscarriage and had lost one of their babies.
At the time, she told her followers: "Thanks for all your lovely messages.
"We’ve had the hard news that one baby hasn’t made it but we are very excited and hopeful for the remaining baby to arrive this summer."
