Helen Worth ‘buzzing’ after TV BAFTA nod

Helen Worth is "buzzing" after earning a TV BAFTA nomination.
The ‘Coronation Street’ star is up the Virgin Media Must-See Moment Award – the only one of the spectacle’s accolades voted for by the public – after an epic, emotional monologue as Corrie’s Gail Rodwell following the suicide of loveable character Aidan Connor (Shayne Ward) last year.
Lucy Fallon – who plays Helen’s on-screen granddaughter Bethany Platt – wrote on Twitter: "Our gorgeous Helen Worth is buzzing today because Gail’s monologue following Aidan’s death has been nominated for a BAFTA! PLS VOTE (sic)"
Helen will face competition for the award from BBC thriller ‘Bodyguard’, which has a nod for the scene when politician Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes) was assassinated, while ‘Peter Kay’s Car Share’ is up for the prize for a scene in which Sian Gibson’s Kayleigh causes chaos on a busy dual carriageway while trying to rescue a hedgehog.
‘Doctor Who’ – on which Helen starred as Mary Ashe in 1974 story ‘Colony in Space’ – is also up for the award for the sci-fi show’s historical civil rights movement episode.
It saw the Time Lord (Jodie Whittaker) and her companions go back in time to come face-to-face with American activist Rosa Parks, who was played by Vinette Robinson.
The moment was praised for the way it "captured Rosa’s powerful act of defiance on a segregated bus".
Netflix makeover show ‘Queer Eye’ made the shortlist for promoting "positivity, well-being and inclusivity", with lonely truck driver Tom’s dramatic transformation being the particular moment that made the list.
Helen – who has played Gail since 1974 – previously scooped the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2014 British Soap Awards.
