Whoopi Goldberg asked BBC for leading Doctor Who role

Whoopi Goldberg asked the BBC if she could be the first female Time Lord on ‘Doctor Who’.
The 63-year-old actress once begged TV bosses to let her star in the popular sci-fi show and thought it would be a great idea for her character to end up in America.
Speaking on ‘David Tennant Does a Podcast With…’ – on which she was interviewed by David, who played the Tenth Doctor – Whoopi said: "I wanted to be the first female Doctor … the American version of ‘Doctor Who’ ends up in New York and it’s me.
"The idea of that so made me happy. But they were like, ‘Um no.’ I was like, ‘OK, I’m cool. I understand.’ "
The ‘Sister Act’ actress – who has also starred in the ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ franchise as Guinan – is a huge fan of the sci-fi genre because she felt like it "predicted the future."
She said: "I always felt like science-fiction predicted the future. Whether it was climate change, hand computers or being able to move around in different dimensions."
Whoopi has previously spoken about her love for British TV and has been vocal about her passion to work with the BBC.
Speaking in 2017, she said: "I always hope when I come to England the BBC will say, ‘Hey we want you to do something.’ I would love that.
"You have a different quality now on television. The way you guys have always done shows has always been the smartest and we’ve finally just figured it out.
"I like the idea of doing things the way y’all do them, you do some really fun stuff like Black Mirror or, you know, I’m still dying to do Doctor Who."
Jodie Whittaker became the first female Doctor, taking on the role in 2018.
