‘Coronation Street’ boss Iain MacLeod has confirmed Amy Barlow will get pregnant in 2019.
The ITV soap’s new producer has revealed that Elle Mulvaney’s alter ego will be expecting a baby next year as the show looks to balance the emotional and comedic sides of the major storyline.
Iain told Digital Spy: "The story becomes more than being just about a teenage pregnancy. It becomes about family and Steve and Tracy’s relationship – it forces them to instantly grow up and be parents for the first time in history.
"It’s really good – it gives a leading role to Elle Mulvaney, who deserves the chance to step up and do something a bit more grown up. I’m very much looking forward to that."
The cobbles boss even suggested the story – which will see Steve (Simon Gregson) and Tracy McDonald (Kate Ford) trying to cope with the surprise news – could have a ‘Family Guy’ twist.
He added: "It’s also really funny. Steve and Tracy dealing with a teenage pregnancy is not like a normal couple dealing with a teen pregnancy!
"There are scenes reminiscent of Peter Griffin in ‘Family Guy’ – Steve goes fully postal at certain times. It’s very funny, classic Steve with that ‘Corrie’ heart. It’s heartbreaking but ridiculous at the same time."
The 14-year-old schoolgirl – who is played by 16-year-old actress Elle – will see her world turned upside down when she discovers she is expecting a baby.
It was recently reported that when her parents discover her pregnancy kit they will hit the roof, with Tracy threatening to "kill" the boy responsible.
