Matthew Kelly hits out at reality TV

Kelly has hit out at the changing world of reality TV and talent shows, claiming producers can misrepresent people too easily.
The former ‘Stars In Their Eyes’ presenter – who hosted the programme for 11 years, and was all over the small screen in the 1980s and 90s – has explained how things have changed over time.
Appearing on ITV’s ‘Loose Women’ on Tuesday (21.08.18), he said: "We’ve got slicker now.
"And I think reality TV has a lot to answer for, and it’s because you could be horrid for 5% of the time and absolutely gorgeous for 95% of the time, and you know that the producers will show that 5%. It looks like that’s how you get on, by being horrid."
The original ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ series spanned from 1990 to 2006 and captured the hearts of the nation as members of the public impersonated big star names, with Kylie Minogue, Madonna, Cher, George Michael, Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, and Celine Dion among the most popular.
Following the initial run, Harry Hill hosted a revamped version of the programme in January 2015, but it was cancelled after just one series due to low ratings.
A source said at the time: "There are no plans to bring it back.
"Bosses liked it but it just didn’t resonate with the viewers."
Matthew has since go on to forge an impressive career on stage – he is currently touring in a production of ‘The Habit of Art’ – and he recently insisted he has no regrets about leaving behind the glitz and glamour of television.
He told the Yorkshire Post: "Why did I pack it in? I’d just had enough. I get bored pretty easily, I think, and I just wasn’t getting the right ‘buzz’ any more.
"They asked me if I’d go on for another series, and I said yes, but I immediately regretted my decision. So when that finished I thought to myself ‘enough is enough, I owe it to myself to do something else’, and off I went. Any regrets? Not one."
