EastEnders poke fun at Tottenham players in World Cup scene

‘EastEnders’ risked incurring the wrath of Tottenham Hotspur fans last night (12.07.18) by poking fun at the club’s England players.
The BBC One soap has made numerous references to the Three Lions’ World Cup progress throughout the tournament by including last-minute scenes in episodes, and last night was no different as Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite) blamed England’s semi-final defeat to Croatia on there being "too many Tottenham players" in the side.
Speaking to her son Hunter Owen (Charlie Winter), she said: "He should’ve taken off Alli, not Sterling. Far too many Tottenham players."
Tamzin was shocked to see she had lost 5,000 Twitter followers since the clip aired – but later found out it was because the social media site had carried out a "crackdown".
She tweeted: "I thought I’d lost 5000 followers for the last min scene on Eastenders re the World Cup game, where I said " in his defence he should have taken off Alli not Sterling .Far too many Tottenham players
"was going to say to all spurs players "it’s a script… i play a character" …
… but it turns out Twitter are on a crackdown… at least we only have the finest of Twitter left among us ! (sic)"
Earlier in the surprise scene, Mel walked in on Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick) sewing a waistcoat back together after he had previously ripped up the jacket in frustration at England manager Gareth Southgate, who wore a navy blue version for all of England’s World Cup games.
A sheepish Billy said: "I didn’t want to sew it up in the bar in case anyone walked in. I couldn’t’ ask Honey, I was too embarrassed.
"I went to Hyde Park last night to watch the game and got the hump, so I tore up the Gareth.
had the hump because he took Sterling off.
"I’d had a few beers. I woke up this morning and felt bit guilty you know, it wasn’t Southgate’s fault, was it?
"So I thought I would fix it up wear it on Saturday. We’ve still got third place to play for and football can still come home, we’re just going to have to wait a few more years."
