Prue Leith ‘felt suicidal’ after GBBO blunder

Prue Leith "felt suicidal" after she accidentally let slip the winner of the ‘Great British Bake Off’.
The 77-year-old restaurateur prematurely announced that Sophie Faldo had become the new champion of the show – 12 hours before the episode had aired on television screens – because she was on holiday in Bhutan and had got confused over the time zone and, although she managed to delete the tweet 89 seconds later, her blunder played on her mind for days.
Speaking on ‘This Morning’ on Wednesday (22.11.17), she said: "I felt suicidal, awful. The thing that upset me the most was that this would take attention off the winner. And Sophie [Faldo] has worked for months and months for this moment. The column inches would be about my tweet and not her triumph. I emailed her and she said, ‘Don’t be silly’. Actually everybody was really nice about it. Celebrities would tweet me and say, ‘It’s exactly what I could have done’. But you have to be a real idiot to do that. We had kept it secret for eight years until I come along and screw up!"
Despite her embarrassing slip up, Prue thoroughly enjoyed her time on the baking show, which she judged alongside Paul Hollywood, because she can say what she wants and eat cake all day.
She explained: "It is the most enormous fun. What’s not to like? I don’t have to learn a script or write the links. I just have to eat cake! Partly it’s because the production company are lovely and the bakers are amazing. They are great bakers. It’s lovely."
Prue – who took over from Mary Berry – has also been asked to judge on the show for the next series and announced the news on the morning of the series finale last month.
She said: "It’s the #GBBO final! Who will win? Thrilled to say Paul, Noel Sandi & I will all be back! Do you want to join us? (sic)"
