Coronation Street’s Kym Marsh wrapped the necklace she wears in memory of her late son Archie around the wrist her alter-ego Michelle McDonald’s stillborn baby in the heartbreaking scenes that aired in the soap last month.
The 40-year-old actress’ children David, 21, Emily, 20, and Polly, five, bought her an angel necklace for Mother’s Day last year to honour their sibling, who was born 18 weeks early in 2009 and tragically passed away hours later, and bosses at the ITV soap decided to use the exact same chain when her character said goodbye to her premature stillborn baby Ruari in the devastating storyline in February.
Speaking exclusively to BANG Showbiz at the TRIC Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in Mayfair, London, on Tuesday (14.03.17), she explained: "The chain I’m wearing now is the chain you saw Michelle wrap around Rory’s wrist but my children bought my this for Mother’s Day last year to represent Archie. It’s the exact same chain so that was a really poignant moment for me. I’ve worn this as Michelle seen my children gave it to me so it was a coincidence really that they wanted Michelle to wrap it around the baby’s wrist."
Although the brunette beauty found the storyline devastating to revisit considering the trauma she went through herself eight years ago, she can’t thank the crew at ‘Coronation Street’ enough for the support they gave her while she was shooting.
She said: "It was tough but when you take on a challenge, you take it on and you see it through. I feel like if you’re not going to do that then there’s no point doing it. This was a storyline that was very close to my heart and we said from the start that we’re going to do it, we’re going to do it properly.
"We’re going to tell it properly. The show really looked after me from day one. I was told I didn’t have to do it if I didn’t want to. But I did it because I was hoping that I could start to get people talking about because it’s such a taboo subject and also because I wanted to honour my son. I had a counsellor on set every day."
Kym – who won Soap Personality at the event, her first one since her Newcomer win 10 years ago – has just had her contract extended until June next year and has teased that there will be plenty in store for her alter ego up until then.
The talented actress – who joined the soap a decade again – said: "I’ve just had my contract extended until next June. You can bet your life on it that there will be more drama but there will probably be a bit of comedy. Lots of ups and downs."
