Walton Goggins joins Tomb Raider

Walton Goggins is set to join the cast of the ‘Tomb Raider’ reboot.
The 45-year-old actor has signed up to join the previously announced Alicia Vikander in the latest adaptation of the popular video game franchise.
Walton’s involvement in the movie was first reported by Variety, and although the website doesn’t detail anything about the plot, it does claim that the star will be playing the role of the antagonist alongside Alicia’s heroic titular tomb radier, Lara Croft.
Roar Uthaug is taking on directorial duties for the project which is slated for release on March 16 2018, and has financial backing from production companies Warner Brothers, MGM, and GK Films.
‘Tomb Raider’ was first released as a video game in 1996 by Edios, who are now a part of large gaming company Square Enix. A total of eleven main games and seven spin-off games have been created since, selling over 35 million units.
The story of the games follows Lara Croft, a British archeologist who travels the world in search of lost relics and forgotten artefacts that are often connected in some way to supernatural powers. Whilst elements of her biography have changed throughout the franchise’s history, Lara has always been portrayed as the only daughter and heir of the aristocratic Croft family.
The first movie adaptation of the gaming franchise was made by Paramount, who released two films starring Angelina Jolie in the lead role in 2001 and 2003, grossing over $432 million worldwide.
For Walton, the role comes after the star has had a busy year on television screens, as the first season of his HBO series ‘Vice Principals’ has just wrapped its first season and has already been renewed for a second.
Walton was most recently seen in cinemas in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful Eight’.
‘Tomb Raider’ is expected to be released on March 16 2018.
